The Magpyrs and Mightily Oats learn to see the sacred in the mundane. Possibly one of my favourite moments (of many, many favourite moments) in the entire series- Oats, who’s spent so much of the book uncertain and unsure of his own religion, finally finding his faith; the vampires, so sure and certain of themselves, finally losing theirs.
Oats is a minor character in the Discworld overall, but his development over the course of this book- and what we find he went on to do in the backstory of Unseen Academicals– is one of my favourite character arcs.

I opened the notes to see if someone had said Monstrous Regiment and that’s literally like 60% of the notes.

So many Discworld fans say things like “I relate most to Vimes” to “I see myself in Granny Weatherwax” but stop lying, every other Discworld fan I’ve met is clearly channelling Constable Visit the Infidel With Explanatory Pamphlets in their enthusiasm to whip out reading order charts and explain to strangers why they should convert to Omnianism read Discworld.

Your classic grizzled, working-class, ex-alcoholic copper who’s been through a whole load of shit and is tough and nasty as fuck….
and we see him cry. Multiple times.
Because crying is normal and natural no matter who you are and it doesn’t make you less of anything.
Sam vimes is a subversion of every cynical-old-cop trope ever. Alcoholic (sorry, a /drunk/) but manages to stay sober no matter how bad shit gets. He not only gets the girl in the end, he keeps her and is devoted to her and doesn’t ever put his work before his child (not even when chasing down criminals). And Sam Vimes, rough and tumble, scarred and always always running and chasing and being chased, cries. He doesn’t just cry in private where no one can see him, he cries openly, in front of his wife, in front of his officers, in front of his enemies (granted, he was also swinging an axe and yelling about where his cow was at the time and everyone was confused and scared of him, but still). And no matter how old and cynical Sam Vimes gets, he’s still that idealistic 16 year old kid that cried in front of his sergeant in the house of pain and on the barracades somewhere deep down.
I have to say, Unseen Academicals had a much greater impact on me now than it did back when I first read it in 2010. Sometimes it’s just nice to read a book about people learning to live happier lives and stuff.
